Area sites host Powerade State Games events

060713PoweradeGamesLogoThe Powerade State Games will begin this weekend and run through the end of June at sites around the Charlotte region. Venues in Charlotte, Huntersville, Cornelius, Mooresville, Matthews, Cramerton, Concord, Indian Trail and Pineville will host events fro more than 14,000 athletes between May 31 and June 29. 

This year’s 28th annual games include two new sports – rugby and inline hockey. Other sports include  baseball, basketball, BMX cycling, disc golf, fencing, figure skating, golf, ice hockey, karate, lacrosse, shooting, soccer, softball, swimming, taekwondo, track & field, ultimate and wrestling.  Athletes can visit www.poweradestategames.org to register for each event.

Here in the Lake Norman area, events will be at NorthStone Country Club in Huntersville, Mazeppa Road Park in Huntersville and other area schools, parks and recreation facilities.  For a complete list of venues and dates, please visit www.poweradestategames.org. 

Baseball will be contested at a half-dozen parks, including Westmoreland Athletic Complex in Cornelius and Hopewell High School. The adult soccer tournament is at Richard Barry Park on Beatties Ford Road in June. Lake Norman Charter School will host basketball. Fencers will compete at Hough High School, while adult softball games will be played at Bradford Park, on NC 73.

The 2014 Opening Ceremonies will be held June 20 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord.  The Opening Ceremonies features a commemorative gift for participating athletes, games, music, a parade of athletes and a lighting of the cauldron to announce the official start to the 2014 Powerade State Games of North Carolina.
